Proof of Work
The original blockchain consensus mechanism where miners compete to solve computationally expensive puzzles. The winner proposes the next block and earns the rewards. Proof of Work secures Bitcoin and most pre-2020 chains.

Proof of Work was the original answer to how a public blockchain agrees on what happened without a central authority. Satoshi’s insight was that if validating a new block requires solving an expensive puzzle, and the puzzle’s difficulty auto-adjusts to maintain a target block time, then the longest chain represents the most accumulated work. An attacker who wanted to rewrite history would need to redo all that work faster than the honest network could extend it, which at scale becomes economically and physically impossible.
The puzzle in Bitcoin is finding a hash that starts with enough zero bits. There’s no shortcut; you just keep guessing random inputs and hashing them until one works. Modern Bitcoin mining requires specialised ASIC hardware designed for exactly this one operation, consuming enormous electricity. The security model is that honest miners collectively control enough hash rate that any attacker would need to match their combined power, which currently costs billions of dollars and several terawatt-hours of electricity per year.
PoW has real virtues and real costs. The virtues are simplicity, proven battle-tested security, and a security model that scales with real physical resources rather than token wealth. The costs are environmental (Bitcoin’s energy consumption is roughly on par with a small country), hardware centralisation (ASIC manufacturing is concentrated in a handful of Chinese firms), and geographic centralisation (mining follows cheap electricity, which clusters in specific regions). These costs are why most newer chains chose Proof of Stake instead.
In DeAI, PoW mostly survives in one form: Proof of Useful Work variants like Flux’s PoUW-v2, which try to direct the computational effort toward something economically valuable (rendering, scientific computing, AI inference) rather than arbitrary hash puzzles. The honest assessment is that PoUW is harder than it sounds because “useful work” is difficult to verify cheaply, and most PoUW chains end up compromising one of the security guarantees that made PoW work in the first place.
